AFL's Buckley says he respects Malthouse
Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley says suggestions his relationship with Carlton coach Mick Malthouse soured because of the way he took over the Magpies job have been overstated.
But Buckley has sidestepped a question over how much the pair still speak, as they prepare to face off as coaches for the first time at the MCG on Sunday.
"I learnt a lot from him, played under him for a number of years as his captain and worked under him as an assistant coach in the plan to eventually become senior coach.
"We've had many frank discussions, not in recent times, (but) we've had many frank discussions about that situation."
Asked whether the lack of recent conversations was because they're no longer on speaking terms, Buckley initially made a freudian slip.
"He's the coach of Collingwood," he said.
". He was. He's the coach of Carlton.
"I haven't spent a great deal of time with the coach of Carlton in my time as coach of Collingwood."
Buckley said he felt for Malthouse, who has said he doesn't want the buildup to Sunday's blockbuster to focus on him.
"It's pretty hard to avoid it, given the connection with the club's so recent and then going to the arch enemy," he said.
The Magpies coach said personally he enjoyed the buildup to such attentiongrabbing games.
"I eat it all up no matter who we're playing," he said.
Buckley said while Malthouse will have insight into Collingwood players, Carlton beat them soundly twice last year without his input.
He said the Blues' speed and midfield strength had been key factors.
The Magpies will again be without midfield star Dayne Beams (quad).
But Ben Reid (concussion) and Ben Johnson (thigh) should both play despite sustaining injuries last weekend and Heath Shaw should return from illness, hollister femmes.
Dale Thomas, Clinton Young, Alex Fasolo, Andrew Krakouer and Paul Seedsman are others in contention to return, with Thursday's main training session important.
